The Drama League hosted a transformative evening with Drama at the Disco, a lively fundraiser held in October at The Edison Rooftop. This annual gala departed from traditional black-tie expectations, immersing guests in a disco-themed celebration while raising crucial funds for the Drama League’s programs dedicated to developing theater directors. Event Chair Mary Jain orchestrated an evening filled with Broadway talent, engaging entertainment, and a supportive community of theater enthusiasts.
The evening, directed by Drama League alumna Elena Araoz, brought together a dynamic mix of live performances and interactive experiences. Broadway stars Ephraim Sykes, Nikki Rene Daniels, Jeff Kready, and Jeanna de Waal took the stage, delivering rousing tributes to disco classics, accompanied by the versatile band Third Reprise, led by pianist Daniel Rudin. The band seamlessly blended genres, reinventing Broadway hits with a disco twist that had the audience captivated.
The event’s ambiance extended beyond the music. Tony nominee Richard Kind hosted a blackjack table, and celebrity bartender Craig Bierko crafted custom cocktails, while guests enjoyed the chance for a professional photoshoot. These interactive elements transformed the rooftop venue into a hub of entertainment, networking, and celebration, embodying the spirit of live theater.
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the prestigious Arts Ally Award to producer Patty Baker of Good Productions. Baker, known for acclaimed shows such as Our Town, Water For Elephants, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, and Memphis, was recognized for her significant contributions to the arts. In her acceptance speech, she emphasized the importance of mentorship and the need for accessible growth opportunities in a competitive field. Drama League President Bonnie Comley praised Baker as “a true champion of the arts” for her enduring dedication to the theater.
Drama League Executive Director Bevin Ross shared that Drama at the Disco not only created a memorable night but directly supported the League’s mission to nurture future theater directors. Founded in 1916, The Drama League has a storied legacy of providing resources, mentorship, and support to new voices shaping the art of theater directing. This gala’s success will bolster initiatives like the Directors Project, America’s only full-time creative hub for directors.
In a post-pandemic world, philanthropic giving has faced challenges, with shifting patterns and fluctuating support. Drama League President Comley noted how the organization’s unique focus on directors has positioned it for enduring relevance. The rising demand for mentorship is evident, with applications to the Directors Project surpassing 1,200 last year. Drama at the Disco underscored The Drama League’s commitment to fostering emerging talent in directing.
Supported by sponsors including Good Productions, Jay and Patty Baker, BroadwayHD, and the John Gore Organization, Drama at the Disco was a celebration with purpose. For more information on how to support The Drama League and its initiatives, visit DramaLeague.org.
